Ramblings about my 1973 VW Thing and 1964 VW Beetle.

Fun with fabrication. I needed a fire extinguisher mount that would put up with off road and still be easily accessible. I kind of copied this from an established design, but with my own modifications. The main frame attaches to the extinguisher with hose clamps. The frame attaches to brackets on the car with a hook on one end and a spring loaded pin on the other. Yah, I could have bought a pre-made mount for $5o, but what's the fun in that.
The Thing was a hopeless basket case I picked up for free in June 2008. It's an ongoing project with a goal to create a reliable "desert beater" on a budget. Form follows function with this car, and I've freely cut, hacked and welded to improve off road performance and safety with no regard to keeping the car original or restoreable. Old blog archives document the build to date.
1964 Beetle
I purchased this car in 1993. I performed piecemeal repairs and intermittently drove it until 2005, when I performed a body-off-pan rebuild with a 2110cc engine, 4-wheel disk brakes, lowered suspension, and irritatingly loud stereo...essentially my "dream car" from High School. The rebuild is not documented here but the car is now included since this is part of my air cooled addiction.
